The work has included two slip lanes for traffic turning onto Riverside Drive from Mackesy Road and Awarua River Road, new sections of footpath, a new bus stop and re-sealing of parts of Victoria Bridge and the Dave Culham Road/Riverside roundabout. Council Engineers have put their heads together over a few questions people have been asking about this work, and have provided updates on a couple of other projects. Riverside Drive Why does some of the new tar seal on Riverside appear to be lifting? Chip seal is the type of seal best used on this kind of road and it requires daylight and warmer temperatures to harden properly and bind with chip into a long-lasting surface. In this case the work was done later in the season than usual, but there was still sufficient sunlight and ground temperature for most of it to harden properly.  Unfortunately the hill at Brook road threw shadow over the chipseal and it was not warm enough for long enough during the day for the bitumen to cure completely and bind properly to some of the chip metal. This will be monitored over the winter period and corrected come October when temperatures rise again. Any attempt to repair it now would cause problems for drivers, with no guarantee of a good result. Why can some places be sealed at night while others can’t be? Cars handle differently and have different effects on road surfaces when moving slowly and going round corners, or going fast in straight lines and different kinds of seal and sealing systems are suitable for different kinds of driving. On Riverside Drive’s 80k stretch, the safest, longest-lasting kind of surface is chip seal.  This kind of seal requires ground, air and sunlight to cure so has to be laid during the day. On Victoria Bridge, the Dave Culham/Riverside Drive and at the five finger roundabout the best kind of seal to use is  Hotmix, which goes on hot and then cools. Because it goes on hot and then sets as it cools it can be applied any time of day. Work coming up on Murphy’s corner Plans for improvements to Ngunguru’s accident prone Murphy’s corner are well under way. The job has been scoped and a detailed design is being developed.  Major projects like this one have many different components, including design, purchasing property, calling for and awarding tenders, all of which have to happen before work begins on the site. Staff estimate siteworks to be a year off at this point, and the next step will be to talk to landowners in the area. Parua Bay pedestrian crossing Parua Bay’s Resident and Ratepayers Association would like a zebra crossing across Whangarei Heads Road between the Parua Bay shops (which are across from Parua Bay Primary School).  Roading engineers have looked at the site and think a Kea Crossing would be safer in this area.  The number of people using the crossing is quite low compared to the number of cars driving through the area. In this situation drivers get used to few people using the crossing, while pedestrians often feel safe simply stepping out into a crossing. Research shows crashes are more likely to happen in this situation. A safer solution would be a Kea Crossing which has permanent yellow or fluorescent yellow-green ‘children’ and ‘school’ warning signs 65 metres before a crossing point. They’re the same as those used outside schools to warn there may be pedestrians crossing ahead. Florescent removable signs are used before and after school, along with swing-out orange school patrol STOP signs. Staff are discussing the options with the school and the Ministry of Education and are investigating whether or not to install a pedestrian refuge island as well.   MIL OSI'
